“The carousel?” I question. “It’s not too kiddy?”

He shrugs, his smile sliding to the left. “It could be cute.”

“It doesn’t give me anxiety, so let’s do it, Parky.”

“Okay, you’ve hit your quota on the nickname,” Parker says, moving to the ticket booth.

“As if,” I complain, following behind him. “You’ve said my nickname an annoying amount of times.”

“So?”

“So, if I have a quota, it applies to you too.”

Parker wiggles his eyebrows. “No, I don’t think so.”

“Whatever.” I step in front of him. “Can I buy our tickets? You’ve paid for everything since we’ve been together.”

He pulls me back. “That’s because I’m the boyfriend.”

“But I’m the one with the job.”

“Don’t worry about it. This whole thing was my idea. I’ll foot the bill.”

“But I’m getting as much out of this as you. Just let me pay for the carousel.”

“As long as it doesn’t cut into your baking while we’re together.”

“Oh, I see. You don’t want me to pay to ensure I’ll keep baking?”

He winks. “You got it.”

A space opens up at the ticket counter and I step forward, buying two tickets.

I grab onto his hand. “Come on, Parky.”

He chuckles, following behind me as we board the carousel. “You know, it’s cute if I call you Kikki. But, can you imagine the crap I’ll get if my friends hear you calling me Parky?”

I slide onto a plastic horse. “They’ll think it’s cute, Parky.”

He holds onto the pole sticking out of my horse. “Is that so?”

I giggle, grabbing onto the collar of his shirt. He leans in, and I can’t help noticing the shine of his lower lip. My hand smooths down his T-shirt and I feel the rise and fall of his chest. I suck in a breath as our eye contact intensifies.

He pulls away, moving to the adjacent horse. “Sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

“It felt like one of those kissing moments, but no one was around.”

My heart booms in agreement.

Leaving the bunny by his feet, Parker climbs onto his horse as it lifts into the air. The carousel begins to spin, and I can’t take my eyes off him. He smooths back his hair and the lights of the ride brighten his pinkish face.

“I know kissing is off the table,” he says. “I’m not going to try anything.”

“You never actually agreed to it.”

“But it makes you uncomfortable. I’d be a complete jerk if I kissed you when you’re against it.” He exhales hard. “I’m sorry for trying back at the sideshow game.”

“I’m sorry too. I shouldn’t have freaked out.”

“No, you were right to say how you felt.”

“But it’s not like we haven’t done it before.” I hunch in embarrassment. “And it’s not like it’s not good.”

He tilts his head in confusion. “So, do you want to put kissing back on the table?”

My heart pounds, pleading for a yes, but logic wins. “No. I want Lewis to be my next kiss.”

Parker nods. “Okay, good.”

Good? He doesn’t want to kiss me anymore?

Ugh. Why am I acting disappointed?

This is a good thing!

Thankfully, the movement of the ride creates a breeze, cooling down my body heat.
